Every week, indiebuzz will be featuring five new artists that are starting to gain significant industry buzz. But since this is our first list, we’re going to take a look at 10 rising artists all of which have released 2 or less full-length albums.
1. Young the giant
Genre – Alternative Rock
Hometown – Los Angeles, CA
Label – Roadrunner Records
I’ve heard two songs from YTG’s upcoming self-titled debut studio album and can already tell that it will be one of my 10 favorite releases by the end of the year. Joe Chiaciarelli (Minus the Bear, The Shins, My Morning Jacket) is producing the album, which is set to be released on October 26th through Roadunner Records.
YTG gained a significant amount of attention after self-releasing the Shake My Hand EP back in 2008 when they were still known as The Jakes. Since then, they have started to reach a broader audience through an extensive amount of touring and performances at SXSW and Bonnaroo. They are currently on tour with Marina and the Diamonds.
Below is an in-studio performance of a song from the band’s upcoming album.
2. Local Natives
Genre – Indie Rock
Hometown – Silverlake, CA
Label – Infectious Records
The Local Natives are a part of the rapidly growing independent music scene in Silver Lake, California, which is responsible for bringing bands like the Silversun Pickups to the eye of the mainstream.
After playing the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas in 2009, the band started gaining prominence, drawing comparisons to the likes of The Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes, and Vampire Weekend.
I’ve been listening to their debut studio album Gorilla Manor on a daily basis and still haven’t really gotten sick of it. Their sound, which Pitchfork describes as “pair glimmering Afropop-influenced guitars with hyperactive drumming and hooky three-part harmonies,” is one that I think a lot of people would enjoy. Their music is honest, well-written, and undeniably catchy.

3. Tallest man on Earth
Genre-Folk Rock
Label-Dead Oceans
Hometown- Dalarna, Sweden
Despite having just released his second studio album, Kristian Matsson (27) has already drawn comparisons to Bob Dylan. His music is simple yet extremely powerful and genuine.
The Tallest Man on Earth is without question one of the best folk acts to emerge in recent memory; and if his work up to this point is any indication, we can expect a lot more good things in the future.
Check out a video of The Tallest Man On Earth performing “The Wild Hunt” below.
4. Chiddy Bang
Genre – Hip-Hop
Label – EMI
Hometown – Philadelphia, PA
Chiddy Bang got a lot of attention after releasing The Swelly Express mix-tape for free on the internet late last year. The album, which ironically tells the story of the band struggling to find success in the music industry, caught the eyes of EMI, who quickly signed them.
The duo borrows from established acts like Radiohead, MGMT and Passion Pit and combines it with intelligent rapping to create a unique sound in a genre that has been desperately lacking in originality.

5. Fun
Genre – Indie-Pop
Label – Fueled By Ramen
Hometown – New york, NY
A lot of people were disappointed when Nate Reuss’ previous band (The Format) called it quits. The band had gained a loyal following after releasing 2 full-length albums.
Fortunately, it wasn’t long before Nate burst back into the music scene. Joining forces with Jack Antoff (Steel Train), Nate took everything that people loved about the Format and made it better. Aim and Ignite is 35 minutes of pop brilliance, combining complex and somewhat over-the-top theatrical arrangements with clever song writing and catchy hooks. Nate’s vocals are impeccable – some have even gone so are as to compare him to the likes of Freddie Mercury. While that may seem pretty bold, I’ve been fortunate enough to see these guys live and can honestly say that comparing this band to Queen is far from unreasonable.
The band has toured with Paramore, Jack’s Mannequin, Weezer, and Relient K and recently signed to indie label Fueled By Ramen.

6. Manchester Orchestra
Genre – Alternative Rock
Label – Favorite Gentleman Records
Hometown – Atlanta, GA
Andy Hull is one of the hardest working guys in music right now. In addition to his role as vocalist/guitarist in Manchester Orcehstra, Hull also has an acoustic side project (Right Away Great Captain) and is releasing an album with Kevin Devine under the name Bad Books. Manchester Orchestra has become well known for their ability to put on highly entertaining and energetic live shows.
Although they got a decent amount of attention from their 2006 release I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child, the band really caught the public’s eye with their sophomore album Mean Everything to Nothing, which was released in 2009.
The band is currently working on their third-studio album.

7. The Republic of Wolves
Genre – Indie Rock
Label – Unsigned
Hometown – New York, NY
When songs from the Republic of Wolves EP His Old Branches were posted anonymously to the internet, they were initially rumored to be demos from Brand New’s (at the time) highly-anticipated Daisy.
If you’re looking for something light-hearted and poppy, then this probably isn’t the band for you. If, however, you’re someone who is willing to give an album multiple spins before passing judgment, you might enjoy these guys.
Their debut studio album is set to be released later this fall, and I have a feeling it will be somewhere in the top 10 of the year for me.

8. Good Old War
Genre – Indie Rock
Label – Sargent House
Hometown – Philladelphia, PA
After their previous group disbanded in 2005, Keith Goodwin and Tim Arnold returned to music in early 2008 with a new project, Good Old War. They released their first LP that year through Sargent House records, which was followed by a self-titled sophomore album. Their sound can be compared to that of fellow Philladelphia natives Dr. Dog, but a little more refined and laid back. Their music is simple and isn’t groundbreaking in any sense, but it is certainly enjoyable.
Good Old War has gotten a decent amount of attention, having toured with acts like Anthony Green and the RX Bandits in addition to playing the SXSW Festival.

9. The Dangerous Summer
Genre – Alternative Rock
Label – Hopeless Records
Hometown – Maryland
Reach for the Sun was one of the surprise hits of 2009 for me. What they lack in originality, they compensate for in honesty, emotion, and relatable lyrics. In addition, lead singer AJ Perdomo’s energetic vocals carry the band and overshadow the somewhat simplistic nature of their songwriting. If they are able to build on what they started with their first album, I can definitely see these guys getting big. Their brand of radio-friendly alternative rock is something that will certainly appeal to a lot of casual listeners. Fans of pop-punk in the vein of The Starting Line or alternative rock like Jimmy Eat World are sure to love these guys.
Right now they’re working on their second studio album, which is set to be released sometime in 2011 through Hopeless Records.

10. Hoodie Allen
Genre – Hip-Hop
Label – Unsigned
Hometown – New York, NY
Hoodie Allen is another artist who has demonstrated the ability to successfully gain exposure without the backing of a major studio. He released “You Are Not A Robot,” which samples Marina and The Diamonds’ ” I am not a Robot”. The song has been featured on several music blogs around the net and can be downloaded for free on thissongissick.com.
